米国駐在ジャーナリストへインタビューしました。

まず、このインタビューに同意して頂き、ありがとうございます。本日、ロサンゼルスで日本の読売新聞の局長としてお話を伺えることは光栄だと思います。イギルスのギネス世界記録帳で、読売の発行部数が世界最大であることを確認したそうですね。日本を襲った悲劇にもかかわらず、140年以上にわたってニュースを提供するという読売の執念深い献身ことが感動しております。

Q:　読売新聞のロサンゼルス市局長久保庭さんはロサンゼルス市に２年お住まいとお伺いしました。

A:　２０２０年９月で２年目を迎えます。

Q:　アメリカ生活において、気に入っているところ、又は不便だなと感じる点はありますか。

A:　アメリカ（特にカリフォルニア州）の凄さとも言えますが、「多様性」が最大のキーワードだと感じています。多人種、多文化の共存が活力ある社会を生み出していると思います。既成概念に囚われず、そして物凄く貪欲に、自由に物事を考えたり、論じたり、実験していくことで、常に進化していく社会を実現していると思います。　

不便だと感じてるのは「移動」です。慢性的な交通渋滞は深刻で、最大のネックです。ロスにいる皆さんがそうかと思いますが、通勤時間の４０５号線は渋滞は深刻でストレスが溜まります。時間が掛かるのは仕方がなくても、時間が安定しなかったり、駐車場を探すのが大変です。

Q: 日本のもので恋しくなるものは何でしょうか？

A: 温泉です。

Q: 今まで一番心に残っている出来事か何かあれば、ご紹介頂けますか。

A: オスカー賞など映画賞を２回取材しましたが、いずれも非常に興味深く感じました。映画ビジネスを発展させる仕組みとして、業界の底支えをしていると感じました。

Q:　異文化の違いを感じられたことがありますか。もしあれば教えて頂けませんか。

A:　常に異文化は感じていますが、アメリカの社会はここ数十年で相当洗練された印象があります。特に食文化の発展には驚いています。例えば、日本食などここ数十年でレベルは相当上がっていると思います。東京にいるのと同じ感覚で食事ができるのは驚きました。ロスは多様性にあふれ、世界中で一番おいしいものが楽しめる都市ではないかと思います。

Q:　日本人観光客に対して何かアドバイスがありますか。

A:　２０２０年は新型コロナウイルス騒動で気軽に米国内を旅行をできる時期ではありませが、ロスを訪れるチャンスがあれば、メキシコ系のフードトラック、アジア系の多いエリアの中華料理など「食」をテーマにした旅行も面白いかも知れません。

Q:　最後になりますが貴社のPRがあればお願い致します。

A:　ネットには情報があふれている時代だからこそ、新聞紙面のように一覧性のある情報は重要かと思います。様々なニュースをチェックする上での「羅針盤」として読んで頂ければ幸いです。

The LA Experience through the Eyes of a Japanese Journalist

First of all, thank you for agreeing to this interview. It is an honor to speak with you today about your time here in Los Angeles as the Bureau Chief for Japan’s Yomiuri Newspaper. I see that Britiain’s Guiness Book of World Record has verified that circulation of the Yomiuri is the largest in the world. I love too the Yomiuri’s tenancious dedication to provide news for over 140 years despite the tragedies that have struck Japan.

Q: 　Kuboniwa-san, You’ve lived here in LA as the Bureau Chief for Japan’s Yomiuri Newspaper for 2 years, right?

A: 　Approaching 2 years in September 2020.

Q:　What about living in America do you love? Do you dislike?

A:　The amazing thing – a key word as it were - about America (especially Southern California) is diversity. There is vitality in the community brought about by the coexistence of various cultures. Not trapped by established conventions, there is a freedom and tremendous appetite for discourse, for invention and improvement of society.

Movement is what I think of in terms of inconvenience. The chronic problem of traffic is severe. Those who are in LA are aware of the challenges and the consequences of driving on the 405 Freeway: The bottleneck caused by cars contributes to stress, an uncertainty of arriving at appointments on time and finding parking spots.

Q: What do you miss most about not living in Japan?

A: Japanese hot spring resorts and spas.

Q: What is your most memorable experience (or experiences) in the US to date?

A: I’ve covered the Oscars twice. At any rate, I have a deep interest in the development of the movie business and industry and how it is supported.

Q: What are the biggest cultural differences you see between Japan and the United States?

A:　Always the wonderful impression I have is that in the last 10 years or so, American society has become more refined; particularly in the development of the food culture. For instance, in the last 10 years, the level of excellence in Japanese food has increased. I was amazed that the dining experience in LA is comparable to Tokyo. Due to the diversity in LA, the town is overflowing with a variety of restaurants. One might argue that LA is the best place to enjoy the culinary arts.

Q:　Do you have any advice for those visiting the US?

A:　With the advent of and the strife surrounding the Corona Virus in 2020, now is a time to refrain from lightly (planning a trip abroad.) However, if you have the chance to travel to LA, visit the Mexican fare food trucks as well as the any one of the abundant Chinese restaurants. It might be fun to create a food themed itinerary.

Q:　Is there any information you’d like readers to know about the Yomiuri?

A:　As this is the age of the Internet and the abundance of news (aka the 24-Hour News cycle), it is important to glance at and scan the site as you would a newspaper. It would be great if Yomiuri readers would use the site as a compass (to navigate their own world and opinions.)
