Girl Power Kodai-Ji Kyoto

Kodai-Ji Temple with its feminine flourishes is like Kyoto’s famed geisha. A smile lingers on the lips. But her backstory is often poignant.　

Nene, widow of Japan’s unifier and tyrannical samurai, Hideyoshi Toyotomi took the tonsure in 1598. She took the vows of a Buddhist nun and built the magnificent Kodai-Ji. The temple, traditional Japanese gardens and teahouses glimmer with gold, lacquer and materials available only to aristocracy.

The adopted daughter of Nene and concubine to Hideyoshi got to keep the mighty Osaka Castle. (Her nickname was Lady Cha-Cha. Think tea, not the dance.) So as not to be outdone, Nene pulled out every designer’s trick in the book to make her new residence the best. (Scroll down if you are a history buff or Reality TV fan.)

Fast Forward: The memories of past dramas appear to have vanished. Under Buddhist Priest (and Life Coach!) Teramae-san, tranquility pervades Kyoto’s Kodai-Ji temple.

In the first YouTube video below, Head Priest Teramae-san expounds upon the vigorous training he endured. Little sleep, lots of menial labor and meditation. For over a decade he also had no contact with the outside world. With a countenance of compassion he explains that he now needs nothing. Except his cell phone.

The wise Buddhist priest also mentions in the second YouTube that Kodai-Ji is refection of the feminine spirit. Edges and shapes are rounded. Even the samurai helmet (kabuto) window overlooking the Zen stone garden – made to look like ripples in water - is softened. The gardens convey a gracious and gentile nature. (Sorry, the videos are only in Japanese.)

Two teahouses adorn the property. One is very much like the teahouse used by Tea Master Sen-no-Rikyu. He was the grandfather of the Japanese tea ceremony. (Sen-no-Rikyu was also a teacher and consultant in all things tea until ordered to commit seppuku by Hideyoshi.)

An abundance of lacquer and gold seen prior to 1912 in the Hojo (Main Hall) is gone. However, it is still a splendid sight. One of the remains of Fushimi Momoyama Castle - a roofed bridge meant for moon viewing stands. Covered stairs leads to a mausoleum which glitters with Hideyoshi’s favorite color gold.

A visit to Kodai-Ji is for seekers of beauty, serenity seekers and cuteness. Exit the premises and the hand of tourism is evident: cafes and shops selling trinkets. Kodai-Ji Temple also hosts light shows in the spring and fall.

Kodai-Ji Temple is located at 526 Shimokawaracho, Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto, 605-0825, Japan. A 15-minute bus ride (on number 100 or 206) from Kyoto Station will take you to Higashiyama Yasui. Allow about 10 minutes to walk. Google Maps is your friend. You may also want to learn the phrase, “Kodai-Ji wa doko desu-ka?” (Where is Kodai-Ji.) You’ll be glad to find this treasure of a temple.

京都のガール・パワー高台寺

フェミニンな姿を誇る高台寺は、京都の有名な芸者のようなものです。微笑みが唇に残る秀吉正妻ねねの裏話はしばしば痛烈です。

日本の統一者であり、横暴な武士秀吉の未亡人であるネネは、1598年に高台寺を建立した。寺院、伝統的な日本庭園、茶屋は金、漆、貴族だけが手に入れることができる材質を使用し、輝いています。

秀吉へのネネと子孫の養子は、強大な大阪城を受けづくことになりました。（彼女のニックネームはレディチャチャでした。外国人のお友達にダンスではなくお茶を考えてくださいを伝えたら良いかも知りません。）ネネは引きを取らないように、建築家の手法を生かした最高の住居を建てさせました。（歴史やリアリティテレビのファンなら下にスクロールしてください。）

早送り：過去のドラマの記憶が消えたようです。僧侶（そしてライフコーチ！）の寺前さんのもと、京都の高台寺に平静が広がっています。

下記の最初のYouTubeビデオでは、寺前主任の激しい訓練について説明して頂きました。睡眠不足、多くの卑屈労働、瞑想。 10年以上にわたり、彼は外界との接続もありませんでした。訓練の後、今のところでは、欲しがっているもの、必要なものはありませんとおしゃっていました。例外は携帯電話です。（笑）

賢明な僧侶はまた、第2のYouTubeで、高台寺は女性の精神の反射であると述べています。端と形状は丸みを帯びています。水の波紋のように作られた枯山水は穏やかな気持ちを表しています。（因みに、YouTubeビデオは日本語のみです。）

高台寺で二つの茶屋があります。一つは、千利休のデザインです。が使用した茶屋と非常によく似ています。ご存知だと思いますが、彼は日本の茶道の祖父と呼ばれています。（千の利休は、秀吉から切腹を命じられるまで、お茶の先生、顧問でした。）

北条（本堂）で1912年より前に見られた豊富な漆と金はなくなりました。しかし、それでも素晴らしい光景です。伏見桃山城跡のひとつ。月見台のある天橋。階段を上ると霊廟があり、秀吉の好きな色の金で光っています。

高台寺への訪問は、美と静寂の探求者は満足することでしょう。さらに、可愛いものが好きな方にもおすすめです。なぜならば構内を出ると、観光向きのカフェや小物を売っているお店があります。さらに高台寺では、春と秋にイルミネーションを開催しています。

京都駅からバスで15分（100番または206番）に乗り、東山安居におります。歩いて10分ほどにつきます。 Googleマップはお勧めです。

外国人のお友達に「高台寺はどこですか？」というフレーズを教えたら良いかもしりません。
